This is a new Kyocera  espresso and coffee grinder.    Kyocera of Japan is famous for their production of ceramic knives, and this grinder has a ceramic conical burr,  meaning it never rusts and can be washed in water with no worries.   The grinder turns out a fine espresso grind at about 200 turns for 14 grams of beans  and is very easy to turn and hold - it WILL grind to Turkish powder fine with a slight burr rub.  The top compartment holds about 3 tablespoons maximum.   

Most notable is that is is VERY quiet in the grinding and the grind is very even.   Japanese precision in the fit of the burr and all of the parts of the mill.   It is made of polycarbonate plastic, steel and ceramic and all parts fit very tightly.   It is designed for easy disassembly for cleaning (a little coffee cleaner and a toothbrush returns the burr to as white as the wind driven snow!). 

Lightweight at only 8.4 ounces, the body is 6" tall, 2 1/4" diameter at the widest point.  The chromed steel handle is 5" long so the grinder doesn't take up much space!  It is perfect for travel, backpacking & hiking as well as use at home.   Tuck it into a corner of your travel gear and you will have fresh ground coffee no matter where you go.

The top lip of the opening of the catch cup is 43mm diameter which enables direct dosing into even the smallest of portafilter baskets!   Very tidy for espresso dosing....no funnels, drawers, scoops or  spills.  

Burr adjustment is made by a ceramic wheel below the burr - easy to adjust - no reaching up in - the adjustment wheel is visible and easy to get to.   Built to last!     Comes with box and instruction papers printed entirely in Japanese with lots of pictures - very easy to understand take down & assembly instructions.  

One drawback to the standard cylindrical Turkish mills is the inability to grind evenly at the coarser settings....the Kyocera has a strong spring installed in the grind axis which pushes the burr outwards and helps maintain stability at coarser grind settings.....the standard Turkish mill simply uses the force of the bean feed to maintain the burr set gap.   This makes the Kyocera very good for the a small press pot or cupping.

Call it a Turkish Grinder....call it an Espresso Grinder....or a Coffee Grinder.....we looked long & hard to find a high quality new hand mill for every use, and the Kyocera compares favorably with the best of the fine grinding espresso hand mills that we've used!
