This is the Orphan Espresso Performs For Press Hand Coffee Grinder!
We remanufacture a new, unused, KYOCERA CM-50 coffee grinder to produce VERY consistent grinding through the full range, fine to coarse - the OE-PFP excels the coarse ranges for Drip, French Press, Moka Pot - any brewing method that requires a less than fine grind . Modern manufacture coffee mills that use top adjustment do not have a lower bearing for the turning axle of the inner burr. This means that when grinding fine, the inner burr is quite close in the outer burr, for good fine consistency, but when using it for coarser grinding, the inner burr will flop around due to the lack of the lower bearing - we've fixed this problem!
We remanufacture the CM-50 by completely taking the grinder apart, and installing a stainless steel lower bearing, then tune & align the burrs. It takes about 30 turns per tablespoon of beans - has a very good sound, and feel when grinding. We have tested this with Press, and there are still a very small amount of fines (after all, it's not a Ditting!) This is due to the physics of conical burr bean grinding - but the OE-PFP is a VAST improvement for coarse grinding compared to any other new hand grinder that we have used!
Ceramic burr made of Zirconium Oxide with glass catch vessel and plastic body. The burr is manufactured by Kyocera of Japan and the glass is Hario....the rest of the grinder is made in China. The burr is a gray/green color and very nicely made and the glass cup is easy to clean and is generally static free. The kit comes with a screw on cap for the glass cup, promoted as a "bean storage vessel", but this all seems a bit obtuse since if you use the catch cup to store beans then into what do you grind? The grinder is a moderate speed mill and is very quiet, grinding with a crunching sound.
As with all of our grinders we have used them and done some directed testing of the mill and we find that the CM-50 is a very good grinder for general fine grinding for filter brewing methods, and with the new upgrade it becomes a full range grinder.
One may find the top stepped adjustment mechanism a bit awkward to use and in our opinion this grinder is best suited as a single setting mill....determine the use of the grinder, set it once for that grind, and not change it or fiddle with the adjustment....changing the setting is one of those "3 hand" jobs and there is no accurate method of keeping track of the setting in a specific manner. These issues are shared with almost all of the NEW manufacture hand mills on the market today.
This is a nice grinder with a large open hopper and the glass catch cup is a plus. It is easy to turn and like the other Japanese mills a breeze to clean and maintain. To us, the ideal set up for hand grinders, for those who make both Press or Drip coffee, and Espresso, would be a Kyocera CM-45 or Porlex, and a Kyocera CM-50 OE-PFP for everything else!
We highly encourage you to undertake the installation of the lower bearing yourself - we offer the CM-50 with the lower bearing kit for DIY installation - it will save you some money, and will enhance your understanding of how these grinders work! (We do offer the PFP with the bearing installed here, and the difference in cost is the labor/time involved in the installation!)
