The Arrarex Caravel manual lever machines are considered by some to make the best ristretto shot of espresso of any of the home lever machines.   We have heard  it said by some that it makes a "reference shot" using an espresso blend or SO beans.   
The earliest machines are badged "VAM" and often have a sphinx logo on the side.  What we have in the past referred to as the 'Type 1" Caravel are almost always silver in color and the "Type 2" came in a variety of bright colors.  The VAM to Caravel to end of production exemplifies an evolution of design  as there were many minor changes made to the machines over the years, all were basically improvements of function, but in some cases the changes represent more economical manufacturing methods and  some shortfalls in materials quality....but the shots remain great no matter which machine.    
There is a high level of body parts interchange among the different years with only a few minor areas that will not interchange (small changes in the mechanism for locking the kettle in place, for example)  and only a couple of differences in the replaceable maintenance parts.  Some parts are only available from donor machines and here we offer as many of the Caravel and VAM parts that we can to keep these machines going strong!
